| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Biotic | Consisting of living organisms |
| Abiotic | something is not alive or made up of living things |
| Organism | a living thing that can function on its own |
| Population | the whole number of people or inhabitants in a country or region |
| Community | a group of people with a common characteristic or interest living together within a larger society |
| Ecosystem | a community of living organisms (plants, animals and microbes) in a particular area |
| Biosphere | the part of Earth where life exists, including all living organisms and their environment |
| Photosynthesis | the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and sugar (energy) for themselves, essentially converting light energy into chemical energy stored as food |
| Producer | an organism that creates its own food or energy |
| cellular respiration | organisms use oxygen to break down food molecules to get chemical energy for cell functions |
| Consumer | an organism that cannot produce its own food and must eat other plants and/or animals to get energy |
| Herbivore | an organism that feeds mostly on plants |
| Carnivore | an organism that mostly eats meat, or the flesh of animals |
| Omnivore | an organism that eats plants and animals |
| Trophic levels | the position of an organism in the food chain |
| Food chain | a linear sequence of organisms through which nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats another. |
| Food web | consists of all the food chains in a single ecosystem |
| Energy pyramid | a model that shows the flow of energy from one trophic, or feeding, level to the next in an ecosystem. |
| Detritivore | an organism that eats dead and decaying plant and animal matter |
| Decomposer | organism that breaks down dead organic material |
| Primary production | the production of chemical energy in organic compounds by living organisms. |
