Earth's Features

TermDefinition
weathering The process that wears away or breaks down rock by wind, water, ice or plant roots.
erosion The process when broken down particles are moved by wind, water, and or gravity. This effects rocks, soil and coastlines.
deposition When the broken down particles from rocks and soil have settle in a new location.
chemical weathering When rain mixes with chemicals that wear down rocks or creates a new substance that slowly breaks apart the rocks.
physical weathering When water, wind, ice or plants cause a rock to crack or wear down.
glaciers Large sheets of slow-moving ice that cut and crack rock as they scrape over land.
sediment Pieces of broken rock
eroded When a pieces of rock has been moved
particles Pieces or small parts of something
topographic map A map that shows the steepness and flatness of an area
physical map A map that shows the natural formations of an area on earth, such as bodies of water, plains, mountain ranges and more.
political map A map that shows places that people have created, such as state capitals, towns, cities, roadways and more.
mineral Nonliving solids that are found in almost every aspect of life such as, rocks, pencils, cereal and much more. There are over 5,000 in existence.
sedimentary rock Created by deposition & compaction from pieces of other various rocks. The different pieces or layers of different colors can be seen.
landform A land feature such as a delta or a sand dune
valley A landform formed by fast-moving river or glaciers over thousands of years
canyon An area between tho cliffs that formed due to erosion from a river or glacier
streak A characteristic of minerals, observed by scraping a mineral on a surface to see what color powder it leave behind.
plates Earth's crust and upper mantle are broken into many plates, including seven major plates and many minor plates, their movement has formed Earth's surface features, such as mountains, volcanoes, earthquakes, and shorelines.
