Ch. 5 Science
Evidence of change
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Fossils | the preserved remains of plants and animals |
| 5 types of fossils | A mineralized fossil Carbonized fossil molds and cast trace fossils original material |
| mineralized fossil | organism's tissue are replaced by an exact copy made of stone |
| carbonized fossil | a thin film of carbon left behind by the decayed organism |
| molds and cast | decayed organism decays completely and leaves an empty space that eventually fills in and hardens |
| trace fossils | imprints, footprints, burrows, etc. |
| original material | all or part of the original organism, Example: amber(fossilized tree resin) |
| Why do evolutionists and creationists view the history of change in living things differently? | -Evolutionists believe that living things evolved from simpler organisms over billions of years -Creationists believe that God created all living things in six days |
| Darwinism | theory by Charles Darwin explaining the origin and continued existence of new kinds of animals and plants by means of natural selection acting on chance variation |
| Uniformitarianism | belief that the earth's physical processes, such as erosion and mountain building, happen at the rate in the present as the past |
| mutation | random changes of DNA |
| modern synthesis | blend of mutation and natural selection |
| dating | attempt to find ages of rocks (fossils) |
| relative dating | rock layers are compared to rock layers near them |
| absolute dating | know rates of radioactive decay of certain elements |
| carbon 14 dating | measure the amount of carbon 14 left in the fossil |
| common ancestor | term used by evolutionist that implies that there is a reproductive connection, but there is no reproductive link. |
| evolutionist view of fossil record | change from one kind of organism to another is very slow. simpler organisms are found in lower layers , more complex are found in younger layers. |
| mass extinction event | many plants and animals found in the fossil record together no longer exist. Many organisms became extinct at the same time. |
| evolutionist view of genetics | belief that the more similar genes of a different organism, the more closely they are related |
| Homologous structures and evolution | When you have bones that are similar, then the organisms are related |
| Vestigial structures and evolution | structure of an organism that evolutionist think no longer has a function. May have had a purpose in the past. |
| embryology and evolution | resemblance of embryos of different vertebrates make evolutionist believe they are related |
| problems with the evolutionist story | look at study guide - pg. 4 |
| what are the three important parts of the Bible's "Big Picture" | Creation, Fall, Redemption |
| What effects did the Fall have on Creation? | it brought death and disease |
| What important event that followed Creation drastically change our world? | The Flood |
