EC Unit II Vocab

QuestionAnswer
chiller a mechanical device in an HVAC system that removes heat from a liquid and circulates it to cool air in a building
conductance a material property that measures the rate of heat flow through a material per unit area and temperature
convection the movement of air in a building due to differences in temperature
degree day a metric used in architecture to measure how much energy is needed to heat or cool a building
diffuser devices that distribute conditioned air into a room and can improve the quality of the air and thermal comfort
economizer cycle an add-on feature to an HVAC air handler that draws in outdoor air and mixes it with return air from indoors
emissivity a surface property that measures a material's ability to emit radiation
forced air system a part of an HVAC system that distributes heated or cooled air throughout a building using ducts and vents
four pipe system a water distribution system that provides climate control for buildings. made up of two separate water coils, one for heating and one for cooling, each with its own supply and return pipes and valve
heat pump uses electricity to provide both heating and cooling to a building
infiltration uncontrolled ventilation whereby air is introduced into a building from outside
latent heat the heat that's released or stored when a substance changes phase without changing temperature
reheat the process of adding heat to air that has already been cooled
sensible heat a type of heat energy that changes the temperature of a substance, material, or space without changing its phase
shading coefficient the ratio of solar heat gain through a specific type of glass that is relative to the solar heat gain through a 1/8″ sheet of clear glass under identical conditions
three pipe system a water distribution system that provides climate control for buildings. made up of two separate water coils, one for heating and one for cooling, with a shared supply and return pipe
two pipe system a water distribution system that provides climate control for buildings. made up of two water coils, one for alternating heating and cooling, one for a shared supply and return pipe
U value assesses the rate of heat loss or gain through all the thicknesses of the combined elements that make up a building component
BTU British Thermal Unit
BTUH British thermal units per hour

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
