Properties of Water

QuestionAnswer
What percentage of the earth is covered by water? 75%
What percentage of the human cell is made up of water? about 65%
What makes water unusual compared to other substances when it freezes? It becomes less dense than the liquid and it floats
Define polar molecule A molecule with an uneven distribution of electrons
What does an uneven distribution of electrons create in a water molecule? It creates a partially positive end and a partially negative end
Which end of a water molecule is partially positive? The hydrogen end
Which end of a water molecule is partially negative? The oxygen end
In a water molecule, where do the electrons spend most of their time? around the oxygen atom
Define hydrogen bond a weak attraction between the oxygen of one water molecule and the hydrogen of another water molecule (between molecules)
In a water molecule, what type of bond holds the two hydrogen atoms to the oxygen atom? a covalent bond (within the molecule)
What holds many water molecules together? hydrogen bonds
Define cohesion. The attraction between molecules of the same substance
What does cohesion cause water molecules to do? stick together and bead up
What is surface tension? Water molecules held tightly together that allows small objects to move its surface
Why can a water strider or a small lizard "walk" on water? surface tension
Define adhesion. The attraction between molecules of different substances
How is adhesion useful to plants? It creates capillary action; the water molecules are attracted to both themselves and the walls of the stem, and this allows water molecules to move up the stem to the leaves.
Be able to draw a water molecule, label the elements, and label the poles partially positive and partially negative see your study guide
What shape is a water molecule? boomerang or Mickey Mouse ears
Be able to draw water molecules properly oriented in space and attracted to each other via hydrogen bonds see your study guide

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
