| COPD | chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; chronic, progressive, incurable lung disease that causes difficulty breathing |
| emphysema | chronic, incurable lung disease where the alveoli in lungs fill with trapped air; usually caused by smoking/chronic bronchitis |
| expiration | exhaling air out of lungs |
| inspiration | breathing air into lungs |
| lungs | respiration organs responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide |
| oxygen therapy | administration of oxygen to increase oxygen supply to lungs |
| respiration | process of inhaling air into/exhaling air out of lungs |
| sputum | mucus coughed up from lungs |
| trachea | air passage from throat to bronchi; also called windpipe |
| abduction | move away from midline |
| adduction | move toward midline |
| atrophy | weakening/wasting away of muscles; spending 7+ days in bed may cause this |

| FWB | full weight-bearing; doctor's order stating a person can support full body weight on both legs w/ no weight-bearing limits |
| muscles | groups of tissues that contract/relax, allowing motion, body support, organ protection, and heat creation |
| NWB | non weight-bearing; doctor's order stating a person can't touch the floor or support any body weight on one/both legs |
| PWB | partial weight-bearing; doctor's order stating a person can support some body weight on one/both legs |
| phantom limb pain | pain in a limb that has been amputated |
| phantom sensation | warmth/itching/tingling in a body part that has been amputated |
| prosthetic | artificial device that replaces a body part and helps improve function/appearance |
| agitated | state of excitement, restlessness, or trouble |
| AD | Alzheimer's disease; progressive, degenerative, incurable disease that causes memory loss, cognitive impairment, and behavioral changes |
| brain | nervous system organ in skull responsible for motor activity, memory, thought, speech, intelligence; also responsible for vital functions such as heart rate, BP, and breathing |
| central nervous system | made up of brain and spinal cord |
| cognition | ability to think clearly and logically |
| delusion | believing something false or out of touch with reality |
| dementia | serious, progressive loss of mental abilities like thinking, remembering, reasoning, and communicating; not a normal part of aging |
| elope | person w/ Alzheimer's wanders away from a protected area and does not return on his own |
| farsightedness | seeing distant things more clearly than near things; also called hyperopia |
| hallucination | false perception involving seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, or feeling things that are not there |
| hearing aid | small device placed in ear that amplifies sound |
| mental health | normal functioning of emotional and intellectual abilities |
| MS | multiple sclerosis; progressive disease where balance, walking, and other functions are negatively impacted |
| nearsightedness | seeing near things more clearly than distant things; also called myopia |
| pacing | walking back/forth in one area |
| paraplegia | loss of function in lower body and legs |
| Parkinson's disease | progressive disease that causes rigid muscles, shuffling gait, pill-rolling, mask-like face, and tremors |
| quadriplegia | loss of function in legs, arms, and trunk |
| reminiscence therapy | encourages ppl w/ Alzheimer's to remember/talk about the past |
| trigger | situation that leads to agitation |
| validate | give value/approval to something |
| validation therapy | lets ppl w/ Alzheimer's believe they are living in the past or imaginary circumstances |
| wandering | walking aimlessly around the facility or facility grounds |
| diabetes | condition where pancreas produces too little insulin, none at all, or doesn't use insulin properly; causes problems w/ circulation and can damage vital organs |
| hormones | chemical substances produced by the body that control many body functions |
| hyperglycemia | high blood glucose |
| hypoglycemia | low blood glucose |
| insulin | hormone produced in pancreas and released from pancreas that moves glucose from blood into cells for energy |
| AIDS | acquired immunodeficiency syndrome; final stage of HIV, cause immune system to weaken |
| benign | noncancerous |
| malignant | cancerous |
