Earth Sci Quiz #1

EMR, Earths energy/heat budget, H20, and energy transfer.

QuestionAnswer
Albedo The percentage of light reflected by a surface
List the 4 laws on radiation 1. All objects emit radiation except for Abs. 0 2. Hotter object = more radiation 3. Hotter object = shorter wavelength of radiation 4. Objects that are good are absorbing are good at emitting.
Bonus: Definition: Nucleosynthesis The creation of heavier elements from lighter elements. Big bang, nukes, fusion stars, etc.
Which types of radiation is harmful? Name all. Ultraviolet, X-ray, Gamma
What are the 3 main gases thats absorb and trap infrared radiation? Water Vapor, Carbon Dioxide, and Methane.
3 types of heat transfer are: Conduction, Convection, Radiation
Does the transition from ice to vapor release or absorb energy? Absorb
What is latent heat? The energy that is absorbed and releases by a substance during a phase change. Ex. Ice melts into water due to latent heat but the temperature stays as 0°C
Defnition: Cohesion Water sticks to eachother
Definition: Adhesion Water sticks to other substances
Definition: Solvent A substance(Most likely liquid) that dissolves another which results in a solute.
Definition: Condensation The phase change from gas to liquid.
Why is the air closer to the ground hotter than air that is further? There are multiple answers to this. First, the ground uses conduction to heat up the air. Secondly, the air from below is under pressure from the air above which makes the air below have a higher temperature.
Little johonny is making a sand castle near the beach and he wonders why sand doesnt just crumble and lose its structure. Why? The hydrogen bonds in water sticks to the sand which contributes to the structure of the sand castle. this is called Adhesion
Why does dew form on grass in the morning? The night allows the ground to cool and so does the air close to it. The water vapor in the air releases its energy to become dew. This is an example of condesation. The dew then sticks to the grass.
Energy from the sun is known as.... Electromagnetic radiation
Why is it better to choose a white shirt than a black shirt on hot days? The white shirt reflects more radiation than a black shirt which makes you cooler. Essentially, the white shirt has a higher albedo.
How much solar energy is reflected by the earth? Essentially, what is the albedo of Earth? 6% from the atmosphere, 20% from clouds, and 4% from the earths surface. In total, the earths albedo is 30%

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
