MOLECULAR MODELS

my cousin throckmorton could shred this

QuestionAnswer
Hydroxyl A group where an oxygen is bonded to a hydrogen. Very common
Carbonyl A functional group with an oxygen DOUBLE bonded to a carbon (C=O)
Aldehyde A kind of carbonyl where the group is located on the end of the molecule.
Ketone A kind of carbonyl where the group is located somewhere in the middle of the molecule.
Amine A nitrogen attachment where a nitrogen is bonded to 2 hydrogens.
Sulfhydryl A sulfur attachment where sulfur is bonded to 2 hydrogens.
If the carbon only has single bonds to hydrogen, what is the ending used? -ane (ex: methane)
How many bonds can a hydrogen form? 1
How many bonds can an oxygen form? 2
How many bonds can a nitrogen form? 3
How many bonds can a carbon form? 4
What are the 6 main elements? Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, oxygen
If a compound has a CARBONYL group on one of the terminal end carbons (an aldehyde), what is the suffix used? -anal
If a compound has a HYDROXYL group on one of the carbons (an alcohol) what suffix is used? -anol
If a compound has a CARBONYL group with one of the INTERNAL carbons (a ketone), what is the suffix used? -anone
What is a hydrocarbon? A molecule that contains only hydrogen and carbon, like methane.
What is special about methane? It is considered the smallest and simplest hydrocarbon.
What will happen if two methanes combine into an ethane? A hydrogen from each will have to separate, causing some extra hydrogen gas.
What can you do to modify existing molecules? Add or subtract things, such as adding in water vapor or oxidizing it.
