| map scale | the relationship between distances shown on a map and actual distance |
| topography | size and shape of the land surface features of a region including relief |

| contour line | a line on a topographic map that connects points of equal elevation |
| index contour | every fifth contour line, made bolder, which makes reading elevation easier |
| depression contour | a closed loop contour with perpendicular marks pointing inward; also called hachures; represent decreasing elevation inside the contour |
