map scale the relationship between distances shown on a map and actual distance
topography size and shape of the land surface features of a region including relief
elevation height of land above sea level
contour line a line on a topographic map that connects points of equal elevation
index contour every fifth contour line, made bolder, which makes reading elevation easier
depression contour a closed loop contour with perpendicular marks pointing inward; also called hachures; represent decreasing elevation inside the contour
