Wit & Wisdom (8th Grade) - Module 1 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
align (v.) 1. to bring into a line. 2. To take sides for or against a party or cause.
sprung rhythm (n.) A poetic rhythm designed to imitate the rhythm of natural speech.
mercury (n.) A heavy, silver-white poisonous metallic element that is liquid and ordinary temperatures.
line (n.) A path that defines the borders of a form, varies in shape and thickness, and can provide information around a work of art through its type and direction.
perspectives (n.) Seeing or understanding a thing from a distinct position and point of view.
vanishing point (n.) The place at which two lines that run beside each other appear to join or meet.
collage (n.) A type of art in which materials such as photographs, images from magazines, cloth, buttons, etc., are pasted to a surface.
retrospective 1. Thinking of events that have happened in the past. 2. Viewing that which is behind. 3. An event that showcases the work of an artist over the entire period of their life.
reconstruction (n.) The act or result of rebuilding or restoring.
coherent (adj.) Easily understood and logically connected
correlation (n.) A link or association between multiple things.
linear narrative (n.) A story that moves chronologically through time, with events described in the order they happened.
crossover (n.) A basketball move; a player quickly dribbles from one hand to the other. A point or place of crossing from one side to the other. The process of achieving success in a different field or style.
ironic (adj.) A difference between what is anitcipated and what actually happens.
irony (n.) A contradiction, a paradox.
elipsis (n.) A punctuation mark that indicates a pause or word that has been left out of a sentence.
evocative (adj.) Usually, brings out a response, thoughts, or feelings, or emotions.
elicit (v.) To bring out something that is latent or hidden.
hones (v.) To make something better for a specific use than it was before.
functional (adj.) Made to have a real and practical use.
theory (n.) 1. A suggestested description of a thing or idea that is often a result of thinking that cannot be physically represented. 2. A scientifically acceptable general principles to explain phenomena.
engage To hire or pay for a service.
evoke (v.) To call forth, to bring to mind.
simulation (n.) A copy or reproduction of a process or circumstance.
empathize (v.) To understand someone else's thoughts, feelings, or situation.
utterance (n.) A vocal statement, spoken or delivered in a loud manner.
conjure (v.) To summon as if by invocation or magic.
distilled (adj.) To take out the most significant part or quality of a thing or idea.
whimsy (n.) The quality or state of being fanciful, an eccentric and often sudden idea or turn of the mind.
venerable (adj.) Deserving honor and respect.
recede (v.) To go back from something with one' and body or one's thoughts and understanding.

imagination (n.) forming pictures in your mind of things that have not happened or that you did not see or experience The ability of the mind to be creative and resourceful. Forming new ideas or concepts not present to the senses
representative (adj.) A model of something
normalized (adj.) To come back to or reach a condition that is standard or conventional
cultural (adj.) Having to do with culture
patronize (v.) To act as if one were better than; belittle
authentic (adj.) Accurate or genuine, not a copy
stereotype (n.) A received and fixed idea lacking in subtlety or detail that is believed by a large number of people
empower (v.) To give official or legal authority to
repress (v.) To hold in by self-control, to prevent the natural or normal expression, activity, or development of one's anger
cover letter (n.) A letter sent with and explaining other documents
ode a poem that celebrates or praises someone or something
free verse a poem with no formal rhymes, stanzas, or rhythmic patterns
list poem a poem that lists items that relate to a central idea; last item is most important
definition poem title: syllabicated word; 1st stanza; definition; 3 stanzas: "As in"
found material poem reframes language from a found source that is not a poem
occasion poem poem written for, and in response to, a particular event or situation
Shakespearean sonnet 14 lines, rhyme scheme ABAB CDCD EFEF GG (heroic couplet)
narrative arc in poetry linear story = beginning -> middle -> end
lyric poem short, often with song-like properties, conveys emotion
tow-voice poem written like a conversation or a duel
