| Matter | Anything that has mass AND takes up space |
| Substance | single kind of matter that has distinct properties – general term for “any matter |
| molecule | two or more substances that are bonded together; the singular of a compound |
| element | a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances |
| compound | two or more atoms that are chemically combined |
| mixture | made of two or more substances that are in the same place but NOT chemical combined |
| solid | substance has definite shape and definite volume |
| liquid | substance has definite volume and indefinite shape |
| gas | substance has indefinite volume and indefinite shape |
| freezing | liquid changing to solid |
| melting | solid changing to liquid |
| vaporization | liquid changing to gas |
| condensation | gas changing to a liquid |
| physical change | changes the physical properties of the substance without changing its identity; ex: cutting, melting, freezing |
| chemical change | changes into a new substance; ex: burning, rusting, baking |
| physical property | can be measured with the 5 senses |
| chemical property | something that needs to be tested to be observed |
