Air Pressure The pressure caused by the weight of a column of air pushing down on an area
Altitude Elevation above sea level.
Atmosphere The layer of gases that surrounds the Earth.
Precipitation Rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground
Evaporation The process of turning from liquid into a vapor
Density The amount of mass of a substance in a given volume. D=M/V
Ozone A form of oxygen that has three oxygen atoms in each molecule instead of two.
Condensation Process where water vapor in the air is turned into liquid water
Transpiration Water from a PLANT that evaporates
Runoff Water that drains from an area of land or a building
Low Pressure System An area where pressure is lower than the surrounding area. Brings warmer temperatures; clouds, and precipitation.
High Pressure System An area where pressure is higher than the surrounding area. Brings cooler temperatures; clear skies
Convection The transfer of heat by the movement of warmed fluids (air or liquids)
Wind Movement of air caused by the uneven heating and cooling of Earth's surface resulting in pressure differences.
Air Mass A huge body of air that forms over a region. All of this air has similar temperature, humidity and pressure.
Air Front The boundary separating two or more different types of air masses.
Global Wind Global winds are really large air masses that are created mainly as a result of:the earth’s rotation, the shape of the earth, and the sun’s heating power.
Jet Stream Narrow belts of high-speed winds that blow in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere.
Coriolis Effect The deflection of an object moving above the earth, seeming to turn rightward in the northern hemisphere and leftward in the southern hemisphere.
Local Wind Winds that blow over shorter distances and change frequently.
Local wind that blows during the day. It blows from the sea toward the land. Sea Breeze
