Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Weathering | The process that breaks down rock and other substances at Earth’s surface |
| Mechanical Weathering | Breaks down rock physically |
| Abrasion | The process of sand and other rock particles that are carried by wind, water, or ice wearing away exposed rock surfaces |
| Chemical Weathering | The process that breaks down rock through chemical changes |
| Oxidation | Iron combines with oxygen in the presence of water in a process |
| Lichen | Plant-like organisms that grow on rocks and produce acid that breaks them down |
| Acid rain | Rain or other precipitation that has become more acidic due to the burning of fossil fuels |
| Biological Weathering | The process by which living organisms break down and weaken rocks and minerals |
| Erosion | The process in which sediment is transported from one place to another by the wind, water, ice, or gravity |
| Landslide | Mass movement that occurs when rock and soil slide quickly down a steep slope |
| Mudflow | The rapid downhill movement of a mixture of water, rock, and soil which can occur after heavy rainfall |
| Slump | Mass movement that occurs when a mass of rock and soil suddenly slips down a slope in one large mass |
| Creep | The very slow downhill movement of rock and soil. |
| Deposition | The laying down or settling of eroded material |
| Delta | A landform that forms from the deposition of sediment carried by a river as the flow leaves its mouth and enters slower-moving or standing body of water |
| Alluvial Fan | A fan or cone shaped deposit of sediment built up by streams |
| Barrier Islands | Coastal landforms that have dune systems that were deposited by wave and tidal action parallel to the mainland coast |
| Beach | A sandy shore by the ocean between high- and low-water marks |
| Marsh | An area of low-lying land that is flooded in wet seasons or at high tide, and typically remains waterlogged at all times |
| Frost Wedging | A type of physical weathering that occurs when water in cracks, crevices, or pores in rocks freezes and expands, causing the rock to break apart. AKA-Ice Wedging |
| Deforestation | The permanent removal of trees from a forest |
| Soil Horizon | A distinct layer of soil that has different physical, chemical, and biological properties than the layers above and below it |
| Surface Mining | A method of extracting minerals from the Earth's surface by removing the soil and rock that covers them |
