Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition

TermDefinition
Weathering The process that breaks down rock and other substances at Earth’s surface
Mechanical Weathering Breaks down rock physically
Abrasion The process of sand and other rock particles that are carried by wind, water, or ice wearing away exposed rock surfaces
Chemical Weathering The process that breaks down rock through chemical changes
Oxidation Iron combines with oxygen in the presence of water in a process
Lichen Plant-like organisms that grow on rocks and produce acid that breaks them down
Acid rain Rain or other precipitation that has become more acidic due to the burning of fossil fuels
Biological Weathering The process by which living organisms break down and weaken rocks and minerals
Erosion The process in which sediment is transported from one place to another by the wind, water, ice, or gravity
Landslide Mass movement that occurs when rock and soil slide quickly down a steep slope
Mudflow The rapid downhill movement of a mixture of water, rock, and soil which can occur after heavy rainfall
Slump Mass movement that occurs when a mass of rock and soil suddenly slips down a slope in one large mass
Creep The very slow downhill movement of rock and soil.
Deposition The laying down or settling of eroded material
Delta A landform that forms from the deposition of sediment carried by a river as the flow leaves its mouth and enters slower-moving or standing body of water
Alluvial Fan A fan or cone shaped deposit of sediment built up by streams
Barrier Islands Coastal landforms that have dune systems that were deposited by wave and tidal action parallel to the mainland coast
Beach A sandy shore by the ocean between high- and low-water marks
Marsh An area of low-lying land that is flooded in wet seasons or at high tide, and typically remains waterlogged at all times
Frost Wedging A type of physical weathering that occurs when water in cracks, crevices, or pores in rocks freezes and expands, causing the rock to break apart. AKA-Ice Wedging
Deforestation The permanent removal of trees from a forest
Soil Horizon A distinct layer of soil that has different physical, chemical, and biological properties than the layers above and below it
Surface Mining A method of extracting minerals from the Earth's surface by removing the soil and rock that covers them

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
