Flocabulary Space Rocks Vocab

QuestionAnswer
any of the small, rocky celestial bodies that orbit the sun. They are most commonly found between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. asteroid
the gases that surround Earth or another planet. atmosphere
a celestial body that moves around the sun, usually in an irregular orbit. It has a central nucleus of ice and rock surrounded by gas and dust that may form a tail that streams away from the sun. comet
a bowl-shaped depression on the surface of a planet or moon, possibly caused by an explosion or the impact of a meteorite. crater
a small body of matter in space that enters the Earth's atmosphere and is heated by friction, causing it to appear as a bright streak of light in the sky. meteor
a large number of meteors that appear at the same time. They are often predicted by astronomers as they occur at certain times every year. meteor shower
a meteor that lands on Earth. They are usually rock, but occasionally they are made of iron or nickel. meteorite
a small body traveling through space. When it enters the Earth's atmosphere, it becomes a meteor. meteoroid
the circular path something (like a moon or planet) follows as it travels around something else. orbit
