Earth's Weather & Climate

TermDefinition
Weather The conditions in a place's atmosphere, such as sunny, rainy or snowy.
Air Pressure The downward force of air that affects weather.
Humidity The amount of water vapor in the air.
Circulation Air moving heat in a circular motion.
Precipitation Water in the atmosphere that falls to Earth as rain, sleet, snow or hail.
Sleet Raindrops that freeze before they land.
Hail Precipitation formed when rain is repeatedly blown back up into the cloud and freezes in layers.
Convection Current A circular motion created when air rises and sinks because of heating and cooling.
Climate The average weather patterns of a place found by studying years of weather.
Latitude Parallel lines on a map or globe that shows how far away from the equator a place is.
Elevation The height above sea level.
Severe Weather Dangerous weather, such as tornadoes and hurricanes.
Natural Disaster A destructive change that is not caused by people.
Condensation when water changes from a gas to a liquid.
evaporation when water changes from liquid to gas.
precipitation when water falls from the sky as rain, snow, hail or sleet.
water cycle The way that water moves around Earth in different forms.
