| character | a characteristic of a species such as size or shape |
| traits | a form of a character such a tall or short |
| purebred | an organism that always produces descendants with the same traits for a specific character |
| hybrid | an organism with a mix of alleles for a specific character |
| dominant | a trait of a specific character that appears in a hybrid organism |
| recessive traits | a trait of specific character that is hidden by the dominant trait in a hybrid organism |
| hybrid crosses | when a hybrid crosses with another hybrid |
| alleles | matching genes one from a one parent and one from another parent. an organism has two copies of every gene. |
| simple dominance | the dominate trait is always expressed in a hybrid cross |
| punnett squares | grid that uses letters to represent alleles |
| genotype | the letters that symbolize organism alleles for a specific gene |
| phenotype | the trait that an organism expresses as determined by its genotype |
| incomplete dominance | pattern of inheritance in a hybrid in which traits are blended |
| codominance | pattern of inheritance in a hybrid in which both traits are presented but not blended |
| multiple alleles | three or more variations of a gene that can exist within a population |
| polygenic inheritance | two or more genes interact to control a single character (ex. skin color, height, intelligence ) |
| genetic drift | a natural process in which the ratio of alleles in a population changes randomly over time |
| natural selection | the process through which organisms with certain adaptions survive to pass on their traits to a greater number of off springs that other organisms do |
| adaptation | an inherited trait that helps an animal survive to reproduce |
