Experience 4: Chemical Reactions and Conservation of Mass

TermDefinition
press "shuffle" for a more random flashcard order (highly recommended) press "shuffle" for a more random flashcard order (highly recommended)
Chemical Symbols The symbols when substances are made of different types of elements Ex. H2O
Products resulting molecules in a chemical reaction
Chemical Equation equation that uses symbols and formulas to describe what happens in a chemical reaction *left side = reactant, right side = product
which side of a chemical equation is the reactant? (left or right) left
which side of a chemical equation is the product? (left or right) right
Periodic Table chart that lists all the known chemical elements
Reactants substances that react with each other to make something new
Law of Conservation of Mass law stating that matter cannot be created or destroyed during chemical reactions
what part of a chemical equation is "yield" the "→" sign (reactant → product)
what is needed for a balanced equation? both sides of the equation must have same amount of atoms
what can u NOT change when balancing an equation? you cannot change the subscript; it changes the product
how to balance “H2+O2→H2O” can change it to “2H2+O2→2H2O” to balance out the equation
Chemical Reaction reaction that occurs when one or more substances are converted to one or more different substances Ex. color change, odor, rusting, change in temperature, producing bubbles, etc. Ex 2. Baking a cake, boiling an egg
Nonmetal Characteristics Brittle, not malleable, not shiny, lower boiling point, poor electrical conductors, etc.
Metal Characteristics Good conductor of electricity,, density, hard, shiny and lustrous, high melting point, etc.
Metalloids Characteristics Shiny, brittle solids, semi conductors, average heat conductivity, malleable, low elasticity, etc.
Mass measurement that refers to the amount of matter that makes up an object, usually measured w/ grams (g) or kilograms (kg)
Volume the amount of space taken by a matter, usually measured w/ cm3 *Formula depends on what shape Water displacement formula: initial water level - final water level = volume
Density the measurement of how tightly a material is packed together d=m/v (mass divided by volume)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
