Unit 2B
Properties of Water
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| adhesion | the ability of molecules of different substances to stick together |
| capillary action | movement of water through very narrow tubes due to surface tension |
| cohesion | the ability or tendency of molecules of the same substance to stick together |
| hydrogen bond | a weak type of chemical bond between a hydrogen atom and another negatively charged atom, which may be in a different molecule |
| polarity | the property of having a negatively charged end and a positively charged end (like magnets have a "+" and a "-" side) |
| surface tension | the tension of the surface film of a liquid, caused by the cohesion of the molecules (they stick together!) |
| heat capacity | amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a substance by one degree; water has high heat capacity |
| tension | the state of being stretched tight. |
| solvent | a substance that is able to dissolve other substances; the larger part of a solution |
| universal solvent | water is able to dissolve almost all other substances, given enough time |
| solute | a substance that is getting dissolved; it is the smaller part of the solution; example: the salt in ocean water |
| capacity | the maximum amount that something can contain |
