| c. difficile/diff | clostridioides difficile, a bacterium spread by spores in feces, hard to kill, symptoms like diarrhea/nausea, can cause colitis |

| contaminated | soiled, unclean, has disease-causing organisms or infectious material on it |

| MRSA | methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, bacteria w/ resistance to methicillin or other antibiotics |
| mucous membranes | line body cavities that open to outside of body, such as mouth, nose, eyes, rectum, genitals, etc. |
| nonintact skin | skin broken by abrasions, cuts, rashes, acne, pimples, lesions, surgical incisions, boils |
| normal flora | microorganisms in/on body, safe only when they're where they're supposed to be, e.coli for example |
| OSHA | Occupational Safety and Health Administration, fed gov agency that makes/enforces rules to protect workers. biohazard bags/containers for example |

| PPE | Personal protective equipment, protects employees from workplace injuries/illnesses from workplace hazards |
| standard precautions | method prevention that treats all blood, body fluids, nonintact skin, and mucous membranes as if they were infected. used with ALL residents |
| sterilization | destroys ALL microorganisms, including spore-forming ones |
| systemic infection | in the bloodstream, spread in WHOLE body, general symptoms, fever for example |
| aspiration | inhalation of food, fluid, or foreign material into lungs |
| atrophy | weakening/wasting away of muscles |
| contracture | permanent, painful shortening of a muscle/tendon/ligament. restricts movement. for example, older ppl going into embryo position |
| body mechanics | how body parts work together when a person moves |
| cyanosis/cyanotic | blue/pale skin and/or mucous membranes due to decreased blood oxygen |
| dysphagia | difficulty breathing |
| PASS | acronym for fire extinguisher use, Pull-Aim-Squeeze-Sweep |
| physical restraint | method/device/material/equipment that restricts movement |
| RACE | steps taken during fire, Rescue-Activate-Contain-Extinguish |
| restraint | physical/chemical restriction of voluntary movement/behavior |
| restraint alternatives | measures used to reduce need for restraint |
| restraint-free care | environment where restraints are never kept/used |
| SDS | Safety Data Sheet, provides info on safe use and hazards of chemicals |
