Literary Terms

TermDefinition
Exposition It introduces characters, problem/conflict and the setting of the story/narrative.
Rising Action Events that lead up to the climax…the action begins, suspense is created, and conflicts occur.
Climax The turning point of the story; the main conflict is addressed.
Falling Action The main character starts to resolves the conflict and tension is eased…moves the plot to its resolution.
Resolution/Conclusion The end of the story, typically action has relaxed, and most conflicts are resolved.

Literary Elements Components or parts of a literary work: setting, plot, characters, theme etc.
Characters A person, animal, or as figure in a story
Protagonist The main/central character usually involved in a conflict with the antagonist.
Antagonist The main/central character’s opponent (creates conflict)
Central/Main Idea What the reading is mostly about
Conflict A problem, fight, or struggle between characters, society, nature, or internally within.
