Weather and Climate
HS Earth Space Science
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| air mass | A huge body of air that has similar temperature, humidity, and air pressure at any given height |
| climate | The average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time |
| cold front | forms when cold air moves under warm air which is less dense and pushes air up (produces thunderstorms heavy rain or snow |
| Conduction | The direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that it is touching. |
| continental climate | a relatively dry climate with very hot summers and very cold winters, characteristic of the central parts of Asia and North America. |
| Convection | The transfer of thermal energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas |
| Coriolis effect | The effect of Earth's rotation on the direction of winds and currents. |
| greenhouse effect | Natural situation in which heat is retained in Earth's atmosphere by carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, and other gases |
| high pressure | A mass of sinking cool air that usually bring fair weather. |
| hurricane | A severe storm that develops over tropical oceans and whose strong winds of more than 120 km/h spiral in toward the intensely low-pressure storm center |
| jet stream | a high-speed high-altitude airstream blowing from west to east near the top of the troposphere |
| low pressure | A mass of rising warm air that usually bring wet, stormy weather. |
| marine climate | the warm and rainy climate located in the middle latitudes in areas that are near or surrounded by water |
| Meteorology | science dealing with the atmosphere and weather |
| occluded front | a front where a warm air mass is caught between two colder air masses and brings cool temperatures and large amounts of rain and snow |
| radiation | transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic waves; the transfer of thermal energy from the Sun to Earth |
| stationary front | A boundary between air masses that don't move possibly causing rain for several days |
| thunderstorm | a storm with thunder and lightning and typically also heavy rain or hail. |
| tropical climate | A type of climate found in the areas just north or south of the equator, where weather is usually hot. |
| warm front | a front where warm air moves over cold air and brings drizzly rain and then are followed by warm and clear weather |
| weather | day-to-day conditions of the atmosphere, including temperature, precipitation, and other factors |
