What is the auricle important for? Localization
Meatus A passage or opening leading to the inside of the body
External auditory meatus Ear canal
What does the external auditory meatus do? Funnels vibrations to the tympanic membrane, Increases the volume of some frequencies, Protects the middle ear and inner ear
The external auditory meatus contains glands that secrete? Cerumen
Cerumen Ear wax
What does cerumen do? Lubricates the external auditory meatus and catches foreign bodies
Tympanic membrane Ear drum
What does the tympanic membrane do? Picks up sound vibrations and is set into motion
The speed of the tympanic membrane is proportional to the _______ of the sound wave Frequency
The magnitude of tympanic membrane vibration is proportional to the _________ of the sound wave Intensity
What are the two main sections of the tympanic membrane? Pars Flaccidea and Pars Tensa
Pars flaccida smaller and more compliant (only 2 layers of tissue)
Pars tensa Larger and stiffer than pars Flaccida (has 4 layers of tissue)
Annulus The outer boarder of the tympanic membrane
