Vocab words - Energy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Force | A push or pull that can cause an object to move, change direction, or change shape; measured in Newtons |
| Work | The transfer of energy that occurs when a force is applied to an object and the object moves in the direction of the force |
| Energy | The ability to do work or cause change; it exists in various forms such as kinetic, potential, thermal, mechanical, electrical, and more |
| Transform | To change from one form to another; for example, energy can transform from potential to kinetic. |
| Conservation | The principal that a certain quantity remains constant over time, even as it changes form |
| Kinetic energy | The energy an object possesses due to its motion; calculated using the formula KE = /frac{1}{2}mv^2 , where m is mass and v id velocity |
| Thermal energy | The energy that comes from the temperature of an object; it is the total kinetic energy of particles in a substance |
| Potential energy | The stored energy in an object due to its position or state; for example a rock at the top of a hill about to roll has potential energy |
| Electrical energy | The energy caused by the movement of electrons; used to power electrical devices |
| Mechanical energy | The total energy of an object due to its motion (kinetic) and its position (potential) |
