Vocab words - Energy

TermDefinition
Force A push or pull that can cause an object to move, change direction, or change shape; measured in Newtons
Work The transfer of energy that occurs when a force is applied to an object and the object moves in the direction of the force
Energy The ability to do work or cause change; it exists in various forms such as kinetic, potential, thermal, mechanical, electrical, and more
Transform To change from one form to another; for example, energy can transform from potential to kinetic.
Conservation The principal that a certain quantity remains constant over time, even as it changes form
Kinetic energy The energy an object possesses due to its motion; calculated using the formula KE = /frac{1}{2}mv^2 , where m is mass and v id velocity
Thermal energy The energy that comes from the temperature of an object; it is the total kinetic energy of particles in a substance
Potential energy The stored energy in an object due to its position or state; for example a rock at the top of a hill about to roll has potential energy
Electrical energy The energy caused by the movement of electrons; used to power electrical devices
Mechanical energy The total energy of an object due to its motion (kinetic) and its position (potential)
