Ecology Vocabulary

Vocabulary from the ABC's of Ecology Lesson

QuestionAnswer
Abiotic Factors Non-living things or factors in an ecosystem.
Adaptation A Change in an organism, developed over time, that makes it more suitable to survive in its environment.
Biosphere The part of the Earth and atmosphere where life is found.
Biotic Factors Living things in an ecosystem.
Change To become different or transform into a different state.
Competition The interaction between biotic factors for limited resources (such as food, water, or space) in an ecosystem
Cycle Events that happen in the same order over and over again. Seasons, life cycles, and cycling of nutrients are all examples of natural cycles.
Disturbance An event, either natural or man-made, which alters ecosystems or even interrupts the process of succession, the gradual replacement of communities in an area.
Ecology The study of interrelationships between the living and non-living things on Earth.
Ecosytem The living and non-living things in an area which function together as an ecological unit.
Habitat The area in an ecosystem where a particular species lives.
Niche The functional role of a species in a community.
Nutrient What an organism takes in to promote growth and development.
Nutrient Cycle A general term for the course traced by any particular life-essential substance as it moves in an endless cycle through the physical (abiotic) and biological (biotic)environment. Essential nutrient cycles include those of carbon, water and nitrogen.
Organism A living thing.
