Experimental Design

TermDefinition
INFERENCE a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.
HYPOTHESIS an idea or explanation that you then test through study and experimentation
CONTROL GROUP a group in the experiment which a variable is not being tested
EXPERIMENTAL GROUP the group in an experiment that receives the variable being tested
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE a variable that stands alone and isn't changed by the other variables you are trying to measure (what is being tested)
DEPENDENT VARIABLE something that depends on other factors. (what we are measuring)
CONSTANT The factors that do not change during the experiment.
QUANTITATIVE DATA measures of values or counts and are expressed as numbers.
QUALITATIVE DATA describes qualities or characteristics.
CONCLUSION a statement based on experimental measurements and observations
SCIENTIFIC THEORY a well-substantiated explanation of a natural phenomenon that is based on repeated observations and experiments
SCIENTIFIC LAW a statement that describes an observable occurrence in nature that appears to always be true
