Experimental Design
| Term | Definition |

| INFERENCE | a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. |
| HYPOTHESIS | an idea or explanation that you then test through study and experimentation |
| CONTROL GROUP | a group in the experiment which a variable is not being tested |
| EXPERIMENTAL GROUP | the group in an experiment that receives the variable being tested |
| INDEPENDENT VARIABLE | a variable that stands alone and isn't changed by the other variables you are trying to measure (what is being tested) |
| DEPENDENT VARIABLE | something that depends on other factors. (what we are measuring) |
| CONSTANT | The factors that do not change during the experiment. |
| QUANTITATIVE DATA | measures of values or counts and are expressed as numbers. |
| QUALITATIVE DATA | describes qualities or characteristics. |
| CONCLUSION | a statement based on experimental measurements and observations |
| SCIENTIFIC THEORY | a well-substantiated explanation of a natural phenomenon that is based on repeated observations and experiments |
| SCIENTIFIC LAW | a statement that describes an observable occurrence in nature that appears to always be true |
