| Term | Definition |

| taboo | crucial to society moral center and are never ok (incest, cannibalisms) |
| folkway | informal small rules (mostly go without saying) |
| mores | mores= moral/strict rules that form set a cultures moral values(bullying, stealing, lying) |
| laws | rules enforced and set by an authority that every one in the community must abide by (no speeding, children must go to school, etc.) |
| benjamin lee whorf | ideas of linguistic relativity, (may or may not have been right) |
| values | feelings people have to the most important aspect of humanity (friendship/loyalty/ evaluates honesty, courage, and integrity) |
| beliefs | belief system of a culture effects there views on things such as education, science, history, other institutions |
| norms | rules or expectations that are socially enforced. |
| (-)sanction | punishment for violating norms (arrested/disapproval/criticism/etc.) |
| (+)sanction | rewards given for conforming to norms(praise/approval/celebration etc.) |
| observe | language, dress, arts, religion manners, food, institutions, |
| doing | the beliefs of a culture/ , ideals, norms, rolls, myths, concepts |
| thinking | doesn't need words/ emotions and feelings that are genuinely felt values/ desires/ assumption/ attitude/ tastes |
