BHS What is LIfe
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| cell | smallest unit of life |
| biology | study of life |
| reproduction | creation of the next generation |
| metabolism | sum of all chemical reactions in an organism |
| homeostasis | maintaining a constant internal environment when the external environment changes |
| gene | carry an organism's traits |
| heredity | passing of traits from parent to offspring |
| mutation | change in DNA that can be harmful, helpful, or make no difference |
| evolution | change in a species over time |
| species | group of similar organisms with the ability to produce offspring |
| natural selection | process by which evolution occurs where organisms with traits best fit for the environment are able to survive and reproduce |
| ecology | study of the how organisms interact with other organisms and with the environment |
| observation | using the senses to perceive objects |
| hypothesis | a testable statement that attempts to explain a possible outcome |
| controlled experiment | a planned procedure to test a hypothesis |
| control group | unchanged throughout an experiment |
| independent variable | the variable that is changed by the experimenter |
| dependent variable | the variable that is measured |
| theory | related hypotheses that have been tested and confirmed many times that answer "why" questions |
| law | explanations of observations that answer, but do not describe why something happens. |
| compound light microscope | microscope in which light passes through multiple lenses. |
| magnification | the number of times an object has been enlarged |
| resolution | how clear the image is |
| stage | where the slide is placed on the microscope |
| eyepiece | where the observer looks through the microscope which contains a lenses which magnifies the object 10 times |
| objectives | lenses of magnification which vary from 4x to 100x. The longer the objective, the higher the magnification |
| stage clips | used to hold the microscope in place |
| iris diaphragm | adjusts the amount of light |
| arm | connects the stage to the eyepiece |
| coarse focus | used to focus the object when using the 4x objective. Moves the stage in large amounts |
| fine focus | used to focus the object on 10X, 40x, and 100x. Moves the stage in very small amounts. |
| inference | a logical conclusion drawn from observations |
| interdependence | the interactions of organisms with the living and nonliving environment |
| experimental group | the test group that experiences a change |
