Engineering Towers Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Civil Engineer an engineer who designs and maintains roads
Keystone a central stone at the summit of an arch locking the whole together
Truss any various structural frames based on the geometric rigidity of the triangle and composed of straight beams to support bridges, roofs, etc.
Arch a curved symmetrical structure spanning an opening and typically supporting the weight of a bridge, roof, or wall above it
Span the full extent of something from end to end, the amount of space that something covers
Substructure the foundations, piers, and abutments upon which the trusses or girders of the span which the bridge rests
Superstructure the part of a building or construction entirely above its foundation or basement
Abutment a structure built to support the lateral pressure of an arch or span (at the ends of a bridge)
Tension the act of stretching or straining
Suspension Structure a device or structure usually a wire or spring that serves to suspend or support something such as the pendulum of a clock
