Engineering Towers Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Civil Engineer | an engineer who designs and maintains roads |
| Keystone | a central stone at the summit of an arch locking the whole together |
| Truss | any various structural frames based on the geometric rigidity of the triangle and composed of straight beams to support bridges, roofs, etc. |
| Arch | a curved symmetrical structure spanning an opening and typically supporting the weight of a bridge, roof, or wall above it |
| Span | the full extent of something from end to end, the amount of space that something covers |
| Substructure | the foundations, piers, and abutments upon which the trusses or girders of the span which the bridge rests |
| Superstructure | the part of a building or construction entirely above its foundation or basement |
| Abutment | a structure built to support the lateral pressure of an arch or span (at the ends of a bridge) |
| Tension | the act of stretching or straining |
| Suspension Structure | a device or structure usually a wire or spring that serves to suspend or support something such as the pendulum of a clock |
