patient positioning

| aspiration | the accidental entry of food or a foreign object into the trachea |
| body alignment | refers to a position in which the body can properly function |
| contracture | occurs when a joint is allowed to remain in the same position for too long |
| draw sheet | folded large sheet |
| enabler | device that empowers patients and assists them to function at their highest possible level |
| fowler's position | position in which the patient lies on the back with backrest elevated to 45 or 60 degrees |
| high fowlers | position in which the backrest of the bed is elevated to 90 degrees, with the patient on their back |
| laceration | accidental break in skin; an injury |
| lateral | away from the midline |
| mobility | ability to move or to be moved easily from place to place |
| orthotic devices | devices that restore or improve function and prevent deformity |
| postural support | device used as an enabler that maintains body position and alignment |
| pressure injury | injuries to the skin associated with open areas from friction, shearing, pressure, and other causes of injury |
| procedure | practices and processes used when following facility policies in patient care. a procedure prioritizes and orders your responsibilities when doing the task. |
| prone | position in which the patient is on the abdomen, spine straight, legs extended, and arms flexed on either side of the head |
| semi-fowlers | position in which the patient is on the back with knees slightly flexed, and the head of the bed is elevated to 30 to 45 degrees |
| slider | device with a slippery, low friction surface that is used for moving patients |
| spasticity | sudden, frequent, involuntary muscle contractions that impair function |
| splint | type of orthosis used to maintain position and prevent contractions on the arm or the hand |
| supine | lying with face upward |
| supportive device | used to help maintain a patients body in a specific position |
| transfer | procedure followed when changing a patients location |
| trochanter rolls | rolled sheet or bath blanket placed under the patient extending from waist to mid thigh; positioned against the hip to prevent lateral hip rotation |
| orthopenic postion | position in which the patient sits up to breathe comfortably. the patient sits as upright as possible and leans slightly forward, supporting their self with the forearms |
