Mapping the Earth Vocabulary

| Compass Rose | a symbol on a map that shows the cardinal directions |
| Coordinates | a set of numbers used to precisely identify the position of a point in space |
| Equator | an imaginary line that divides Earth into two equal parts; |
| Hemisphere | One half of a sphere, formed by a plane that passes through the center of the sphere |
| International Date Line | defines the boundary between calendar dates |
| Latitude | Lines show distance in degrees north and south of the Equator |
| Legend | a section of a map that explains the meaning of its symbols, colors, and shapes |
| Longitude | Lines that show distance east and west of the Prime Meridian |
| Map Scale | the ratio between the distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground |
| Meridians | lines of longitude |
| Parallels | lines of latitude |
| Prime Meridian | he imaginary line that divides Earth into two equal parts: the Eastern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere |
| Times Zones | zones on the Earth that are approximately 15° longitude wide and extends from pole to pole and within which a uniform clock time is used |
| Benchmark | a marked point of a known documented elevation |
| Contour lines | an imaginary line drawn on a map that connects points of equal elevation above sea level |
| Contour Intervals | the vertical distance or difference in elevation between two adjacent contour lines on a map |
| Elevation | the vertical distance of a point on the Earth's surface above sea level |
| Gentle slope | a land surface that has a slight incline, are indicated by wide spaces between contour lines |
| Hachure lines | a short line or curve drawn on a map to indicate the direction and steepness of a slope |
| Profile | a cross-sectional view of the landscape that shows a specific area along a line on a map |
| Steep slope | a land surface with a significant change in elevation; are indicated by contour lines that are very close together |
| Topographic map | maps that show relief using contour lines |
| GPS | Global Positioning Systems-used to identify places on Earth using a system of satelites |
| Satelites | an object that orbits a larger object, such as a planet or star and sends out radio signals to communicate with control stations |
| Waypoint | a reference point that helps us know where we are and where we're going |
