Scientific Investigation Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Problem | A question that can be answered through experimentation |
| Hypothesis | an assumption, an idea that is proposed for the sake of argument so that it can be tested to see if it might be true |
| Test | a process that involves gathering data and comparing expectations to observations to determine the accuracy of a scientific idea |
| Analyze | the process of breaking down complex topics or issues into parts to better understand them |
| Conclusions | a statement that summarizes the results of an experiment and explains the significance of the study |
| Law | a statement that describes a natural phenomenon that is always true, or at least appears to be so |
| Research | the process of systematically collecting, interpreting, and evaluating data to contribute to the scientific body of knowledge |
| Theory | a well-substantiated explanation for a natural phenomenon that is based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment |
| Trail | an experiment or test that assesses the value, quality, or usefulness of something |
| Constant | a factor that remains unchanged during an experiment |
| Control | a component of an experiment that remains unchanged and is not affected by other variables |
| Dependent Variable | a variable that is affected by and depends on another variable, known as the independent variable |
| Graph | a diagram that visually represents the relationship between variables or quantities |
| Independent Variable | a variable that is manipulated or controlled in an experiment to see its effect on other variables, called dependent variables |
| Table | a structured presentation of data in columns and rows that is used in data science as a fundamental tool for information organisation, archiving, and analysis |
| Metric System | a decimal-based system of measurement where the fundamental units are the meter (length), kilogram (mass), and second (time), with all other units derived from these using multiples of ten |
| Meter | unit of length in the metric system |
| Liter | unit of volume in the metric system |
| Solids | a form of matter that holds their own shape and volume |
| Volume | the amount of space occupied by a sample of matter |
| Mass | the measure of the amount of matter in an object |
| Weight | a measure of the pull of Earth's gravity on an object |
| Length | the measurement of the distance between two points or the endpoints of an object |
| Gas | a state of matter consisting of particles that have neither a defined volume nor defined shape |
| Area | the amount of space occupied by a two-dimensional figure |
| Liquid | one of the states of matter that are free to flow, so while a liquid has a definite volume, it does not have a definite shape |
| SI unit | The International System of Units, internationally known by the abbreviation SI is the modern form of the metric system |
| Temperature | is the measure of hotness or coldness expressed in terms of any of several scales |
| Density | is a measure of the amount of matter that occupies a particular space |
| Specific gravity | a comparison of the density of a substance to the density of water |
