5 characteristics of epithelial tissues Polarity, supported by connective tissues, regeneration, specialized contacts, avascular but innervated
What is the basement membrane made up of? Basal lamina and reticular lamina
What is the bond between epithelial and connective tissue? connective tissue shares its blood supply and nutrients with epithelial tissue through diffusion
How is stratified epithelia named? the cell is named according to the shape in the apical layer
What is simple epithelia involved in? absorption, secretion, and filtration processes
Rapid diffusion is a priority in what classification of epithelia? simple squamous
Where is mesothelium? A simple squamous that lines serous membranes
Where is simple squamous found? kidney glomeruli, air sacs of lungs, lining of heart, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels, serosae
What are the functions of simple cuboidal epithelium? secretion and absorption
Where is simple cuboidal found? kidney tubules, ducts and secretory portions of small glands, ovary surface
What is the difference between cilia and microvilli? Cilia is hair-like and microvilli are projections of the cell to increase surface area
What are the functions of simple columnar epithelium? absorption, secretion of mucus, enzymes, and other substances
Where is simple columnar found? nonciliated types line most of the digestive tract (stomach to rectum), gallbladder, and excretory ducts of some glands, ciliated variety lines small bronchi, uterine tubes, and some regions of the uterus
What are the functions of pseudostratified columnar epithelium? secretion of substances, particularly mucus, prop
Where is pseudostratified columnar found? ciliated - lines the trachea and most of the upper respiratory tract nonciliated - males' sperm-carrying ducts and ducts of large glands
