Unit 1 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Latitude A coordinate that can specify the North-South position of a point on the Earth's surface or on another celestial body.
Longitude Geographic coordinate that can specify the East- West position of Earth's surface or another celestial body.
Prime Meridian A Prime Meridian is a chosen Meridian in a geographic form at which longitude is defined to be an end result of 0 degrees.
Equator The Equator is a circle of Latitude that divides Earth.
Parallels Lines of Latitude, also known as parallels, are imaginary lines that can divide the Earth.
Meridians The Meridian is the opposite of parallels, this is because they are lines of Longitude.
Compass Rose The Compass Rose is found on maps, nautical charts, and compasses. This is used to find to find the monumental display of cardinal directions alongside of their intermediate points.
Map Key A little box that's has information in a narrative from on the bottom of a map.
Map Scale The ratio of the inches on a map that can correspond to inches, feet, or miles on the ground.
Cardinal Directions These are the basics you find on the compass. The directions are North, East, South, and West.
Intermediate Directions The directions are the ones between North, East, South, and West. Examples: Northeast, Southwest,etc.
Inset Map A map that examples a larger area in context of smaller areas.
Map Title Gives a little summary of the map. The factoids that can normally be shown are the maps purpose and what it's about.
Grid A bunch of smaller lines of Latitude and Longitude. These are primarily used for city plans.
Symbols A mark or design that is used to represent something. Symbols can contain different colors,shapes, and animals.
