Practice on Properties of Water
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cohesion | the attraction of molecules for other molecules of the same kind |
| Adhesion | the attraction of molecules of one kind for molecules of a different kind |
| Surface Tension | the tendency of liquid molecules to attract one another and contract to the smallest possible surface area |
| Capillary Action | when liquid flows through narrow spaces without external forces, such as gravity |
| Attraction | a force that draws two objects together or keeps them attached to each other |
| Concave Meniscus | when the molecules of the liquid are attracted to those of the container |
| Convex Meniscus | when the molecules have a stronger attraction to each other than to the container |
| Solvent | any substance, usually liquid, which is capable of dissolving one or several substances |
| Solute | the product that the solvent dissolves |
| Specific Heat | the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance by one Celsius degree |
| Polar Molecule | a molecule in which one end of the molecule is slightly positive, while the other end is slightly negative |
| Nonpolar Molecule | molecules that do not have any electrical charges or partial charges |
| Solubility | the ability to be dissolved |
| The Chemical Formula of Water | H₂O |
| Water Striders | a type of bug that has the ability to float on water |
| Evaporation | the process of a water molecule transforming into water vapor |
| Hydrogen Bond | the bond which is responsible for holding together different water molecules |
| Covalent Bond | the bond which is responsible for holding together the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in a water molecule |
