Matter

| atom | basic unit of matter |
| molecule | when two or more atoms combine |
| solid | particles are neatly arranged and packed together in a fixed place |
| liquid | particles are close together but not fixed in place so they are able to move around |
| gas | particles are far apart with no regular arrangement and are not fixed in place |
| color | is determined by what color of light is reflected by a substance |
| electrical conductivity | how easily electricity can pass through a substance |
| magnetism | how attracted to a magnet a substance is |
| hardness | resistance to being cut or struck |
| boiling point | the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas |
| melting point | temperature at which a substance turns from a solid to a liquid |
| density | amount of mass contained in given volume |
| pure substance | consists of just one type of particle. They can be further classified as elements or compounds. |
| heterogeneous mixture | a mixture of two or more substances that are not uniform in composition and do not blend smoothly |
| homogeneous mixture | a substance that is made up of parts or elements that are the same or very similar. ex. air, salt water |
