Weather

QuestionAnswer
What does weather mean? Short-term state of the atmosphere - can change within minutes or hours.
What does climate mean? Long-term pattern of weather - the average weather over many years in one specific place.
Where in our atmosphere do most weather occour? The troposphere.
What is meteorology? The science of studying the atmosphere - predicting the weather.
How do meteorologists detect patterns in the weather? By using data.
What does a thermometer measure? Measures air temperature.
What does a anemometer measure? Measures the wind speed.
What does a barometer measure? Measures the air pressure.
What does a weather radar do? Detects approaching rainfall.
What are weather satallites used for? To monitor cloud cover, and the surface temperature of the land and sea.
What does a hygrometer measure? Measures the amount of air humidity in the air (amount of moisture/ water vapour).
What are isobars? Used to indicate the flow of air around water systems.
What does hPa stand for? what is a unit of pressure? Hectopascals
What does isobars being close to each other mean? This shows where the winds are strongest.
What does high pressure cause? Has weathers that are dry, settled, and has light winds
What does low pressure cause? Has cold, wet, and windy weathers.
What're the differences in high pressure in the northern compared to the southern hemisphere. The winds rotate clockwise.
What're the differences in high pressure in the southern compared to the northern hemisphere. The winds rotate counter-clockwise.
What does a cold front cause? Causes warm air to rise, cool and condense into cloud droplets. Sudden drops in temperature
What does a warm front cause? Displaces cool air with warmer air - not common in Australia.
