Earth & Space

Understanding patterns in the movement of the Earth, its moon and stars.

TermDefinition
axis Imaginary line that goes through the center of an object. for Earth, this line passes the North Pole, through the center to the South Pole.
rotation The spinning of a planet of a planet, moon or star around its axis.
revolution The movement of one object around another.
orbit The path an object follows as it revolves around another object.
ellipse Like a circle, but stretched out at opposite ends. This is the shape of Earth's path around the sun.
constellation Patterns of stars that appear in shapes.
Northern Hemisphere The half of Earth that is north of the Equator.
Southern Hemisphere The half of the Earth that is south of the Equator.
moon phases Different shapes of the moon that appear to be seen from Earth.
eclipse When an object in space gets between the sun and another object and casts a shadow on the other object.
Solar Eclipse When the moon passes between the sun and Earth and casts its shadow on Earth.
