Nature of Science
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Science | process that uses observation and investigation to gain knowledge about events in nature |
| Scientific Method | An organized set of investigation procedures used by scientists |
| Hypothesis | educated guess or testable prediction |
| Experiment | organized procedure for testing hypothesis |
| Control | standard for comparison |
| Constant | factor that doesn't vary in experiment |
| Independent variable | factor that is adjusted by the experimenter (x-axis); the thing you change |
| Dependent variable | factor whose value depends on the independent variable (y-axis); the thing you measure |
| Scientific Law | Rule of nature that sums up related observations to describe a pattern in nature ex. Kepler's Laws |
| Scientific Theory | Explanation based on experiments - most logical explanation ex. Theory of Plate Tectonics |
| Observation | Information you gather using your senses |
| Graph | A visual display of information or data. |
| Line Graph | Show trends or how the data changes over time |
| Bar Graph | Useful for comparing information collected by counting |
| Circle (pie) Graph | Used to show how a fixed quantity is broken down into parts |
| qualatative observation | An observation we gather using our senses and is not expressed numerically (example: color, texture, smell) |
| quatitative observation | An observation we gather through measurement and can be expressed numerically (examples: length, density, width) |
| Technology | Application of science to help people |
| Accuracy | how close a measurement is to the true value |
| Precision | The degree to which repeated measurements show the same result. |
| Bias | A particular preference or point of view that is personal, rather than scientific. |
| Models | representations of objects or systems |
| peer review | A process by which the procedures and results of an experiment are evaluated by other scientists who are in the same field or who are conducting similar research. |
