controlled experiment vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Title An appropriate title can always be worded like this: The effect of (something) on (something)
Problem statement An appropriate problem statement should always begin, “This experiment is designed to see…” For example: This experiment is designed to see what effect cold temperature will have on plant growth
Hypothesis An appropriate hypothesis should always include the words, “if, then, because”
Control group description A controlled experiment must have a control group
Experimental group description A controlled experiment must have an experimental group
Independent variable The scientist has complete control over the independent variable
Dependent variable The dependent variable is what gets measured or observed in an experiment
Operational definition You have to be very specific about how you will measure the dependent variable
Controlled variable These are things that are kept the same between the control group and the experimental group
Conclusion The conclusion should answer the problem statement
Source of error Nothing is perfect in an experiment
Improvement How would you make your experiment better next time if you could do it over? Your improvement should address your source of error
