HPE anatomy

Superior Closer to the head than another part
Inferior Closer to the feet than another part
Anterior Towards the front of the body
Posterior Towards the back of the body
Medial Towards the imaginary midline of the body
Lateral Away from the imaginary midline of the body
Proximal A body part closer to its attachment point
Distal A body part further away from the point of attachment than another
A joint a location at which two or more bones make contact. They are constructed to allow movement and/or provide mechanical support.
Immoveable joints where two bones are fused together, therefore allowing no movement to occur. Connected by dens fibrous tissue. There is no joint cavity between bones.
Slightly moveable joints There is where bones are joined by cartilage, they allow some movement
Moveable joints Allow body to move in many different directions. There is a joint cavity, or space between the bones, which is filled with fluid. The ends of the bones are covered in smooth cartilage.
Cartilage a type of supportive and protective tissue. it covers the ends of bones that make up a joint
Tendon a band of dense connective tissue tat attches muscle to bone.
Ligament a band of connective tissue that connects bone to bone to provide strength and flexibility to a joint.
Ball & socket the round head of a long bone fits into a hollow socket of another bone
Pivot One bone sits on top of another bone and pivots around
Hinge Two bones are joined together like the hinge o a door, allows only back and forth movements, such as bending and straightening
