| setting | when and where a story takes place |
| indirect characterization | how a character is revealed through speech and actions |
| foreshadowing | a clue that foretells of future events |
| exposition | the introduction of a short story (setting, characters, and conflict) |
| complications | obstacles in the resolution of the conflict |
| climax | the story's most emotional/suspenseful moment; the "high point" |
| resolution | what happens after the climax; the end of the story where loose ends are tied up |
| suspense | a feeling of anxious curiosity |
| point of view | the perspective from which the story is told |
| rising action | the name given to all of the events before the climax of a story |
| irony | when events turn out differently than the reader expected |
| allusion | a reference; to mention something that one is expected to know |
| dialogue | a conversation in writing |
| inciting event | an event early in the story that kickstarts the plot |
| ruthless | having no compassion or pity |
| bitterness | quality of having a sharp unpleasant taste; condition causing sorrow or pain |
