classifying mass
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| Pure Substance | Has consistent chemical and physical properties throughout |
| Element | A pure substance that only contains 1 type of atom, cannot be broken down into simpler chemical components using chemical means. |
| Compound | A substance made up of 2 or more different elements chemically combined into a fixed ratio |
| Mixture of Substances | A combination of different substances |
| Homogeneous Mixture | A mixture with uniform composition, looks the same throughout and hard to separate. |
| Solution | homogeneous mixture of 2 or more substances |
| Heterogeneous Mixture | A mixture where the components are not uniformly distributed, does not appear the same throughout, and is easy to separate. |
| Physical Change | A change from one state to another (solid, liquid, or gas) without a change in chemical composition. Ex. change of state, dissolving, freezing, odor, temp change, etc. |
| Chemical change | Any change that causes a new substance to be formed (a change in chemical composition) Ex. color change, odor, rusting, change in temperature, producing bubbles, etc. |
| Nonmetal Characteristics | Brittle, not malleable, not shiny, lower boiling point, poor electrical conductors, etc. |
| Metal Characteristics | Good conductor of electricity,, density, hard, shiny and lustrous, high melting point, etc. |
| Metalloids Characteristics | Shiny, brittle solids, semi conductors, average heat conductivity, malleable, low elasticity, etc. |
| order of size of elements Small → Large | Atoms → Elements → Moleucules & Compounds |
