Solar System
solar system objects, the planets, rotation, orbit, revolution
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| elliptical | a slightly oval shape |
| asteroid belt | a ring of asteroids orbiting the Sun; located between Mars and Jupiter |
| meteoroid | a small chunk of rock that travels through space |
| orbit | the path of an object around a moon, planet, or star |
| celestial body | natural objects outside the Earth's atmosphere |
| crater | round, hollow areas in the ground made up by large space rocks |
| meteor | a meteoroid that burns up as it passes through the Earth's atmosphere; "shooting stars" |
| dwarf planet | space bodies that orbit the Sun; too large to be asteroids, but too small to be planets |
| revolution | the movement of one object around another; an orbit |
| gravity | an invisible force that pulls objects towards each other |
| asteroid | large, irregularly shaped, rocky bodies that orbit the Sun |
| atmosphere | a layer of gases that surround planets or other celestial bodies |
| axis | the point on which a planet spins around |
| star | a massive ball of burning, glowing gas in space that produces its own light and heat |
| moon | a large natural object that orbits, or travels around, planets |
| Earth | The 3rd planet from the Sun; our home planet |
| Mercury | The 1st planet from the Sun |
| Venus | The 2nd planet from the Sun |
| Mars | The 4th planet from the Sun |
| Jupiter | The 5th planet from the Sun |
| Saturn | The 6th planet from the Sun |
| Uranus | The 7th planet from the Sun |
| Neptune | The 8th planet from the Sun |
| black hole | a region in space with such strong gravity that nothing, not even light, can escape |
| Sun | The star at the center of our solar system |
| Pluto | Used to be considered the 9th planet in our solar system; is now classified as a dwarf planet |
| dwarf planet | a celestial body that is smaller than a planet, is not a moon, and lacks the gravitational force to pull material into its orbit |
| satellite | a space object that orbits around another space object; can be man-made or natural |
| comet | a small, icy object made of dust, rock, and frozen gases that orbits the Sun |
| meteorite | a meteor that crashes into Earth's surface |
| Kuiper Belt | a region of the solar system beyond Neptune; contains many comets, asteroids, and other small bodies made of ice |
| Oort Cloud | a spherical shell of icy, comet-like objects that surround the solar system |
| Inner Planets; Terrestrial Planets | Planets with rocky surfaces; the first four planets in our solar system; Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars |
| Outer Planets; Gas Giants | Planets made of gas without solid surfaces; the last four planets in our solar system; Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune |
