Physical Properties of Matter & Mixtures: 4th Grade

TermDefinition
Gas state of matter in which the substance expands to take both the shape and entire space of its container; will escape when the lid of the container is removed
Liquid state of matter in which a substance takes the shape of its container; has the ability to flow
Matter anything that takes up space and has mass
Physical Properties characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing the substance
Mass how much matter is in something
Magnetism a force that can attract or repel materials made of iron, steel, nickel, or cobalt
Buoyancy the ability to float in water because of its shape
Relative Density ability to sink or float in water
Physical State of Matter solid, liquid, or gas
Solid has a definite shape and volume
Liquid has an indefinite shape but a definite volume
Gas has an indefinite shape and volume
Volume the amount of space that something takes up
Mixture two or more substances that keep their own physical properties when mixed together
Solution a mixture in which one substance dissolves in another substance
Dissolve to mix a substance completely into a liquid
Solubility able to dissolve
Conserve keep from going away
Classify to put into groups
Evaporation liquid changing to a gas
Condensation gas changing to a liquid
Conductor a material that allows heat or electricity to flow through it easily
Insulator a material that does not allow heat or electricity to flow through it easily
Attract a force that causes material to pull together
Repel a force that causes material to push away from each other
Texture how an object feels
