Unit 1 test practice

Scientific method, Characteristics of life, levels of organization

TermDefinition
Stimulus signal from the environment
the sum total of chemical reactions in an organism metabolism
maintenance of a stable internal environment homeostasis
adaptation Adjustment in an organisms traits that occurs over long periods of time
A specialized structure within a cell, that has a specific function organelle
Tissue A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function in an organism
Organ A part of an organism, typically self-contained and with a specific vital function, composed of different types of tissues.
Organism an individual living entity
Population A group of individuals of the same species living in a specific area, capable of interbreeding
Reproduction process of creating new individuals of the same species
Heredity the passing down of traits from parent to offspring
DNA the molecule where genetic information/instructions are stored
Development gradual change in an organism’s shape and function over its lifetime
Growth increase in size or mass
Cell The basic unit of life; a small, self-contained unit enclosed by a membrane, capable of performing life-sustaining functions
unicellular made of only one cell
multicellular made of multiple cells
Biology the study of life
Community Different populations of various species living together and interacting in a defined area
Ecosystem A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
biotic factors living things within an ecosystem
abiotic factors non-living components of an ecosystem
Biosphere The global sum of all ecosystems
Observation information gathered usually using your senses, in an orderly way
Hypothesis a scientific explanation that can be tested through experimentation
Controlled Experiment an experiment in which only one variable is changed
Control group The group that has no changes in the independent variable.
Independent variable the variable that is deliberately changed in an experiment
Dependent variable the variable that is observed and changes in response to the independent variable
Constants all the factors that stay the same
Inferences subjective explanations for an observation, usually based on past experiences and judgment
what is the largest level of organization in biology? biosphere
The atom is the basic unit of life (true or false?) false
In biology, structure is related to function (true or false?) true
Unicellular organisms have tissues (true or false?) false
unicellular organisms organize in populations (true or false?) true
the independent variable goes where on a graph? x- axis
the dependent variable, goes where on a graph? y-axis
atoms and molecules are living or non-living? non-living
Name the levels of organization that come before and after "cell" organelle and tissue

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
