| Biodiversity | The variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem |
| Transpiration | Evaporation of water from the leaves of a plant |
| Ecology | The Study of how living things interact with each other and their environment |
| Macroinvertebrates | Organisms without backbones, which are visible to the eye without the aid of a microscope |
| Aquatic | A term that describes an organism associated with a water envrionment |
| Abiotic | Non-living things |
| Ecological succession | Series of gradual changes that occur in a community following a disturbance |
| Riparian Buffer Zone | a strip of land alongside a river or stream where plants are grown to help slow down erosion |
| Cellular Respiration | The process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food |
| Eukaryote | A cell that contains a nucleus and membrane bound organelles |
| Food Web | a community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains |
| Terrestrial | relating to the Earth or to land |
| Dissolved Oxygen | oxygen dissolved in water. dissolved oxygen is important for fish and other aquatic animals |
| Symbiosis | A close relationship between two species that benefits at least one of the species |
| Wetland | a land area that is covered with a shallow laye4r of water during some or all of the year |
| Photosynthesis | Conversion of light energy from the sun into chemical energy |
| Diploid | an organism or cell having two sets of chromosomes or twice the haploid number |
| Coniferous | term used to refer to trees that produce seed-bearing cones and have this leaves shaped like needles. |
| Tributary | A river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake |
| Invasive Species | species that enter new ecosystems and multiply, harming native species and their habitats |
| Benthic | bottom of an aquatic ecosystem; consists of sand and sediment and supports its own community of organisms |
| pH | a figure expressing the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a logarithmic scale on which 7 is neutral, lower values are more acidic and higher values more alkaline. |

| Sediment | small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things |
| Biological Niche | the role a species has in its environment; how it meets its needs for food, shelter, etc. |
| Haploid | An organism or cell having only one complete set of chromosomes |
| Prokaryote | a unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus and membrane bound organelles |
| Deciduous | trees and shrubs that shed their leaves at the end of the growing season |
| Competition | the struggle between organisms to survive in a habitat with limited resources |
| Evolution | change in a kind of organism over time; process by which modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms |
