Vocab for Yr7 cells unit

TermDefinition
Organelle Inside cells are structures called organelles. This literally means “little organs”.
Cell membrane A thin membrane that surrounds every living cell
Cytoplasm A jelly-like substance in which many chemical reactions take place. It is also where the other cell organelles exist.
Nucleus The command centre of the cell. This is where DNA is found.
Mitochondria The “powerhouses of the cell,” mitochondria organelles produce the energy necessary for the cell's survival and functioning
Microscope Microscopes are used to look at objects that are too small for the naked eye to see.
Photosynthesis The process by which green plants and certain other organisms transform light energy into chemical energy. Carbon dioxide + water → oxygen + glucose
Respiration cellular respiration: oxygen + glucose --> carbondioxide + water + energy We need to get oxygen and glucose IN, and carbon dioxide and excess water OUT. We do all this to give our cells ENERGY.
Chloroplast An organelle that convert light energy into chemical energy using photosynthesis.
Cell wall A structural layer that surrounds some cell types (algae, fungi, bacteria, and plant cells). It is found immediately outside the cell membrane. It can be tough, flexible, and sometimes rigid.
Vacuole Where food and water is stored inside the cell.
Unicellular Unicellular = single cell Each cell does everything needed to keep the cell alive
Multicellular Multicellular = many cells Animals and plants that are made up of lots of different cells working together.
Microorganism Microorganism = microscopic living thing
Fertilization The process by which two gametes (sex cells) fuse to become a zygote, which then develops into a new organism.
Reproduction The production of offspring. There are two main forms: sexual and asexual reproduction.
Cell division The process by which a parent cell divides into two daughter cells.
Mitosis The process by which a single parent cell divides to make two new identical daughter cells.
Embryo The initial stage of development for a multicellular organism. It is the part of the life cycle that begins just after fertilization of the female egg cell by the male sperm cell.
Cells Cells are the building blocks of life. All living things are made of cells.
Organism Organism = living thing
MRS GREN (M) movement, (R) reproduction, (S) responding to stimuli in their environment, (G) growth, (R) reproduction, (E) getting rid of wastes/excretion , and (N) taking in nutrition

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
