Nature of Science/Intro to Earth

TermDefinition
Scientific Method An organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world.
Hypothesis A testable prediction
independent variable The experimental factor that is manipulated; the variable whose effect is being studied. The x in the equation.
dependent variable The outcome factor; the variable that may change in response to manipulations of the independent variable. The y.
constant or controlled variables Things that the experimenter wants to remain the same throughout the entire experiment.
controlled experiment An experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time.
conclusion A summary based on evidence or facts
Data Facts
Graphs a diagram representing a system of or interrelations among things by a number of dots
scientific theory a well-tested concept that explains a wide range of observations - the "how & why"
Scientific Law A statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions - the "What"
biosphere Consists of all life on Earth and all parts of the Earth in which life exists
hydrosphere all the waters on the earth's surface
Geosphere The mostly solid
atmosphere the envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet.
