Gr. 6 Q4 Sequence 1
How do interactions between the Earth, Moon, and Sun influence patterns on Earth
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Rotate | To turn or spin on the object's own axis |
| Revolve | To navigate around another object in a circular motion |
| Moon phase/lunar cycle | The moon's repeated pattern of movement and changes in appearance due to its position relative to the Sun and Earth |
| Lunar Eclipse | Occurs when the Earth passes between the moon and the sun |
| Solar Eclipse | Occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the sun |
| Spring Tide | Large tides due to the Sun, Earth, & Moon are aligned with each other, thereby acting in the same direction |
| Neap Tide | Small tidal range when Sun and Moon are at a right angle to the Earth, thereby acting in opposite directions |
| Full Moon | The appearance of the moon when it looks like a completly lit circle |
| New Moon | The appearance of the moon when it looks like the moon is absent from the sky |
| Waxing | A phase of the moon that is getting larger |
| Waning | A phase of the moon that is getting smaller |
| 1st Quarter Moon | A moon phase that appears half empty circle with the left side dark |
| 3rd Quarter Moon | A moon phase that appears like a half empty circle with the right side dark. |
| New Moon | A moon phase that appears like a dark, empty circle |
| Full Moon | A moon phase that appears like a full circle |
| Gravitational Pull | The force of gravity on an object |
| Gravitational Pull increases when... | Objects are more massive and/or closer together |
| High Tide | A High Tide occurs when the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon are combined. |
| Low Tide | A Low Tide occurs when the gravitational pull of the sun and moon are not combined. |
