How does the Earth’s System protect life on Earth and insulate the planet?

| Geosphere | The part of Earth containing all land and rocks above and below Earth's surface |
| Biosphere | All of the living or once living items on Earth. |
| Hydrosphere | The sphere composed of all of the liquid water on Earth. |
| Cryosphere | The sphere composed of all of the frozen water on Earth. |
| Atmosphere | The sphere composed of all of the gas on Earth like air and exists as layers above Earth's surface. It is also the only sphere that surrounds all of Earth like a blanket. |

| Mesosphere | The coldest layer of the atmosphere. Second thickest layer. |
| Stratosphere | The layer of the atmosphere that protects life on Earth by absorbing harmful UV radiation. |
| Thermosphere | The layer of the atmosphere that is the thickest layer and where the space shuttle and International space station orbit. |
| Troposphere | The layer of the atmosphere that is the closet to Earth. Living things can exist in this layer. |
